LAMal premium reduction / subsidy in Canton Vaud
New arrival from abroad with no Swiss tax assessment: the law lets OVAM use your real current situation (a declaration of income and wealth) when it differs by 20% or more from the tax-based figure. It also states that foreigners living alone in Switzerland who must show sufficient financial means under federal foreigners law (as students on a B permit do) are in principle not entitled to a subside, except as a time-limited hardship case requested in writing from OVAM (LVLAMal art. 12 para. 1 and 3, art. 13, BLV 832.01).

What this page is for
How Canton Vaud can pay part (or all) of your compulsory health-insurance premium (assurance obligatoire des soins / LAMal), under the name subside (premium reduction). Who may apply, where to apply, which documents official pages name, published 2026 income/wealth parameters, and how this interacts with student status and the LAMal obligation. It does not cover complementary insurance, housing, or B-permit steps.
What the subside is (and is not)
- Federal frame: FOPH states that cantons must reduce premiums for people in modest economic circumstances. For lower- and middle-income families, cantons must cut children’s premiums by at least 80% and young adults in education by at least 50%. Who qualifies, how much, and the procedure are cantonal. Some cantons grant help automatically; Vaud requires an application. The canton pays the insurer; you pay only the remaining premium.
- In Vaud: the Canton can finance part or all of your LAMal premium according to household income and wealth. Goal stated on Vaud pages: keep the premium burden near 10% of your determining income (revenu déterminant). The help is called subside. It does not cover complementary insurance (assurances complémentaires).
- Payment path: OVAM decides by letter. If granted, the subside is paid to your insurer, which deducts it from the basic premium and bills you the balance. You do not receive the money directly.

Who may apply in Vaud (conditions named)
Vaud’s application page names two conditions:
- Be domiciled in Canton Vaud.
- Be insured with an authorised LAMal insurer in Canton Vaud.
Only adults (18+) may file their own application. Minors: parents or legal representative apply.
Student / LAMal obligation interaction (read with LAMal):
- The subside is for people already on Swiss compulsory insurance in Vaud. If you successfully hold a Vaud dispense (exemption) because you stay only for training and keep equivalent foreign cover (for example an EHIC path), you are not paying a Vaud LAMal premium, so this subside track does not apply. Obligation, three-month window, and dispense rules: LAMal and Vaud insurance obligation.
- If you must take out Swiss LAMal (no valid dispense, or dispense refused / expired), you can then evaluate and apply for a subside once you are insured in Vaud. Note that Vaud law excludes, in principle, foreigners living alone here who had to prove sufficient means for their permit, apart from hardship cases (LVLAMal art. 12 para. 3 and art. 13).
Warning from Vaud: you do not need a paid private service to file. Regional social-insurance agencies help for free. Ignore scam calls about “premiums or subsidies” (Vaud links an eCop François video on the subside hub).

When the right starts
- General rule: the right begins on the first day of the second month after the month you file (example on Vaud pages: file 20 May → subside from 1 July; FAQ example: file 10 December → from 1 February).
- Exceptions named: beneficiaries of revenu d'insertion (RI), AVS/AI complementary benefits, or the cantonal bridge pension: right opens with that benefit.
- From another Swiss canton into Vaud (FAQ): Vaud subside from 1 January of the year after you arrive (canton of domicile on 1 January pays for the year), except RI / PC AVS/AI paths described on the FAQ (still file formally; RI from certain cantons may wait until the following 1 January).
- Leaving Vaud: no transfer of the right; apply again in the new canton.
- Processing: as of the 2026 renewal wave, Vaud warns that processing times are longer than usual.

Income and wealth parameters published for 2026
All CHF below come from the OVAM Notice explicative 2026 (valid from 1 January 2026, arrêté of the Conseil d’État of 17 December 2025) and/or the matching arrêté PDF. They are parameters for OVAM’s formula, not a promise that you will receive that amount. Use the official online estimator with your own tax decision.
Goal and determining income
- Ordinary + specific subside aim to limit premiums to about 10% of determining income.
- Base is usually the net income on the latest definitive tax assessment in force when OVAM processes the file (2026 renewal cohort: tax decisions in force by 17 October 2025, unless a later financial update).
- If current finances differ by 20% or more up or down from that assessment, OVAM recalculates from recent proofs (FAQ / notice).
- Wealth add-on: 1/15 (6.7%) of fortune above CHF 59,000 (single / single-parent) or CHF 118,000 (couple), among other RDU adjustments listed on the conditions page and in the notice.
- Flat premium deductions used in the RDU build (LHPS): CHF 2,200 (one adult), CHF 4,400 (two adults), plus CHF 1,300 per dependent child (minor or financially dependent adult child).
Ordinary monthly subside bands most relevant to students (Notice 2026 table)
Figures are monthly CHF for the ordinary subside. Exact amount inside a band is formula-based. Premium regions in Notice explicative 2026: Région 1 = Lausanne, Ouest lausannois, Nyon, La Côte, Lavaux, la Riviera (EPFL-area communes such as Ecublens sit in Ouest lausannois / Lausanne). Région 2 = le Chablais, le Pays d'Enhaut, Oron, Cossonay, la Broye, le Vully, le Gros-de-Vaud, le Jura, le Nord Vaudois. Ordinary monthly amounts in the student bands below are the same for Région 1 and 2; region mainly affects reference premiums used for the specific subside.
| Profile (Notice 2026) | Determining-income band (CHF / year) | Ordinary monthly subside (CHF) |
|---|---|---|
| Single, 19–25 in training, financially independent | 0–16,000 | 255 |
| Same | 16,001–40,000 | 255 → 186 (decreasing) |
| Same | 40,001–45,000 | 186 → 20 |
| Same | above 45,000 | no ordinary subside (table end) |
| Single, 19–25 not marked “en formation” | 0–16,000 / 16,001–34,000 / 34,001–39,000 | 255 / 255→20 / 20 |
| Adult 26+, living alone | 0–17,000 / 17,001–40,000 / 40,001–50,000 | 331 / 331→30 / 30 |
Arrêté art. 2 confirms for 19–25 in training, living alone and financially independent of parents: max 255, first threshold 16,000, second 40,000, upper cut-off 45,000, minimum 20. For 19–25 in training living in a multi-person UER or financially dependent on parents: max 220, thresholds 20,000 / 58,000, upper cut-off 76,000.
A specific subside can still apply after the ordinary check if remaining premiums exceed 10% of unified determining income, using reference premiums (not necessarily your billed premium). See the notice tables; they do not publish a personal entitlement for you.

Student-specific calculation (FAQ)
If you are an adult in training (studies or apprenticeship):
- Financially dependent on parents (FAQ definition): parents still have a maintenance duty because you are in a first training, under 26, and you earn no more than CHF 1,500 net per month. Then the subside uses your income plus a percentage of your parents’ income.
- Over 26, or in a second training: calculated on your income (plus spouse’s if any).

Practical sequence for a newcomer student
- Settle LAMal vs dispense first (LAMal). Subside only if you are (or become) LAMal-insured in Vaud.
- Keep your commune domicile current; agencies and OVAM mail follow domicile.
- Gather tax assessment or current income/wealth proofs, ID/permit, LAMal policy, EPFL enrolment / training attestation.
- Run the official online estimate, then file online or at your agency. Free agency help only.
- After a grant, check that the insurer deducted the subside; overpaid premiums for a retroactive period must be refunded or credited (FAQ).
- Report income/wealth/household changes (notice: duty to inform; 20% shift triggers review). Moving canton: re-apply there.
- Optional premium shopping (franchise / model / insurer) is separate from the subside; Priminfo compares basic premiums. Year-end change deadline often cited: 30 November (Vaud notice for 2026 premiums).
Serafe (radio/TV household fee) is a different bill from LAMal premiums and is not reduced by this subside. See Serafe.
Still unclear
- To verify: Exact percentage of parental income used when you are under 26, first training, ≤ CHF 1,500 net/month. FAQ says “a percentage”; Notice 2026 footnote says “a part” of the parents’ unified determining income. No published figure on those pages.
- To verify: Current processing delay length. Subside hub only states that times are longer than normal for the 2026 renewal wave (no number of days/weeks published).
Prefer FOPH + Priminfo + Vaud for federal and cantonal information on premium reductions.
Unofficial student project. Always re-check OVAM / your agency and your insurer before you rely on a subside amount.
