IS-Academia basics (course registration hub)

Last checked: 5 Oct 2026. Unofficial student guide, not EPFL or government advice: confirm on the linked official pages before you act. Unfamiliar abbreviation? See the Glossary.

Companion to CAMIPRO & matriculation. Registration windows move every semester: use the live Academic calendar, do not memorise dates from this page alone. Late-registration CHF below is taken from EPFL Study management (Master’s projects page); confirm at the desk if your case is ordinary subject registration.

What this page is for

How Bachelor / Master students reach IS-Academia, log in with an EPFL identity, complete the semester FRAC, and register for courses. Exact open/close dates and exam-session rules stay on EPFL’s own pages.

What IS-Academia is

IS-Academia is EPFL’s study management portal. Students use it for the Academic Reregistration Form (FRAC), course registration, personal details, enrolment certificates, and semester invoices.

Help hub: IS-Academia Help
Secure portal entry (Gaspar): isa.epfl.ch … isacademia.htm (also linked from Access)

How to log in

  1. Open the secure IS-Academia entry above.
  2. Sign in with your EPFL Gaspar identity. The login page says your ID can be your @epfl.ch email, your SCIPER number, or your username.
  3. UNIL students who take EPFL courses in their UNIL programme can authenticate with their UNIL account via the link on that same login page.

EPFL’s student help page: the portal is optimised for Firefox (latest version if possible); other browsers usually work but may show small incompatibilities.

New Bachelor students: after admission is confirmed you receive EPFL credentials (username and password) during the summer; they unlock mailbox, Moodle, IS-Academia and other secured services.

Typical semester sequence (what EPFL publishes)

Do these in order on IS-Academia:

  1. FRAC (Academic Registration / Reregistration Form) At the start of each semester, validate personal and academic details under the FRAC tab. Course registration is only possible after FRAC is completed and submitted. You cannot register for subjects during a semester marked “on leave” or “on internship”.
  1. Semester invoice and enrolment certificate After FRAC is validated, the semester invoice appears on IS-Academia as a PDF plus a payment link. Once payment is processed, EPFL emails you that you can download the matriculation certificate for the coming semester and extend your CAMIPRO validity at a campus machine. New Bachelor page: the certificate sits under the personal details tab after personal details are validated and semester fees are received.
  1. Course Registration tab Select courses / projects with the tick boxes, then Save. An email notifies you when registrations open. Off-plan EPFL courses: use Other Courses / Autre matière, search by name, code or lecturer. Projects: registering on the Projects portal alone is not enough; you must also register the project under Course Registration.

Browser tip: the Menu button (top right) opens links to older IS-Academia pages for functions not yet migrated.

Registration windows (always check the live calendar)

EPFL’s FAQ states the pattern, not a fixed fee table:

Semester Regular subject registration (FAQ wording)
Autumnfrom August to the Friday of the second week of the autumn semester
Springfrom January to the Friday of the second week of the spring semester

Early registration for some subjects or the Master’s project can open once FRAC is done (late May for autumn, mid-December for spring), depending on your study plan.

Always confirm live dates on the Academic calendar (also in the EPFL Campus app). Example rows already published for Autumn 2026–27: general registration opens 5 Aug 2026 (Master’s) / 6 Aug 2026 (first year and Bachelor’s); FRAC and registration are due 18 Sep 2026; classes start 7 Sep 2026. Spring 2026–27 rows are on the same page.

Some programmes impose extra deadlines for specific subjects. Maximum-capacity subjects follow a priority order on the FAQ page (compulsory / retake first, then optional, then minors two weeks before the semester).

If you miss the regular deadline

EPFL: after the Friday of the second week of the semester you can no longer register for subjects on IS-Academia. You must go in person to the Student Services Desk and pay a fee for late registration. EPFL says this rule accepts no exception. The final deadline for late registration is the tenth Friday of the semester.

Late-registration fee (published CHF): EPFL’s Master’s projects Study management page states a late registration fee of CHF 50 when you register after the Friday of the second week (in person at the Student Services Desk). The subjects registration FAQ describes the same desk path and says you pay a fee, but does not republish a separate CHF figure. Use CHF 50 as the published Study management amount for that desk late-registration path; ask the desk if your case differs.

Student Services Desk: student.services@epfl.ch, +41 21 693 43 45, EPFL BP 1229 (BP building), Mon–Fri in person 9:00–17:00, phone 9:00–12:00 and 13:30–17:00 (Student services).

Semester fees (separate from the late-registration fee)

Every Bachelor / Master semester invoice totals CHF 780 for the standard track, or CHF 2,240 for some students from autumn 2025 under the foreign-student tuition tripling (see EPFL’s own detail). Breakdown EPFL publishes:

Component CHF
Tuition730 (or 2,190 under the tripling track)
AGEPoly membership25 (refundable via AGEPoly if you opt out)
Sports facilities contribution16 (compulsory)
Social fund9 (compulsory)

Invoice payment late: if you miss the deadline printed on the invoice, EPFL charges Fr. 50.- (semester invoicing page). That is not the course late-registration fee above.

Payment methods on the invoicing page: credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, UnionPay, Diners/Discover), PayPal, Twint, or payment slip / bank wire from the PDF invoice.

Tests / exams

EPFL: registration for tests (during the semester or in the exam session) is automatic for subjects you registered for. Annual subjects need both semester parts. Exam withdrawal open and due dates appear on the Academic calendar; for how to file a withdrawal, follow the Study management pages linked from that calendar and the registration FAQ (this page does not repeat those steps).
