What this page is for
Short orientation when you:
- move to another commune (or canton), or
- leave Switzerland at the end of studies / for a long break.
Arrival rules are on Permit & commune. Travel before the permit card arrives is on Travel without permit.
Canton baseline (Vaud)
- Arrivals: announce within 8 days in the new commune (cantonal rule). Your commune page may match EPFL’s 14 days (e.g. Lausanne for many foreign students) or be stricter (8 days in Ecublens, Renens, Chavannes-près-Renens). Always follow the commune on your lease.
- Départs / address changes: announce to the Contrôle des habitants of your commune of residence. A landlord / gérance announcement does not replace your own declaration.
- eDéménagement: if your current and future communes participate, you can often announce online. If only the departure commune is in the system, you may announce departure online but still finish arrival at the new commune’s counter. Do not double-file (online + in person) unless asked. The canton's eDéménagement page lists Ecublens, Renens, Chavannes-près-Renens, Saint-Sulpice, Lausanne and Epalinges as participating, but online filing is not available if you are leaving for abroad (or arriving from abroad), and third-country nationals can use it only for a move within Vaud (not to another canton). In those cases, go to the commune counter.

To verify: exact “sans délai” / same-day wording for your commune’s departure form, open that commune’s départ page before you leave.
Leaving Switzerland (end of stay)

A plain address change without forwarding is free, but mail sent to the old address is then returned to sender. Prices as published 5 Oct 2026: Swiss Post, Réexpédier le courrier, Changement d'adresse
Pension fund money (LPP, pillar 3a) when you leave: see Swiss pensions: LPP and pillar 3a.
Swiss or dual national liable for military service? Moving abroad affects the exemption tax: see Military service exemption tax in Vaud.
Temporary absence (internship / project abroad)
If you tell the commune you are leaving without keeping a Swiss home address, EPFL says you will need a new residence permit (and possibly a new visa) on return. Prefer keeping a principal address in Vaud for short absences when the commune allows it, see EPFL’s Temporarily for holidays, internship, project abroad and Staying in another canton sections.
